Behind the Scenes of a Personal Branding Session with a Wedding Photographer in Westhill
Why Sending an Enquiry for a Photo Session Takes Courage
Sending an enquiry for a photo session is hard because it takes a lot of courage to confront the uneasy feeling of doing something where you don't have absolute control.
That is why I like to honour the trust people place in me by offering a dedicated service and clear guidance throughout the entire process. My goal is to help my clients feel confident that the final photographs will be something they are genuinely proud of and that truly represent who they are.
Creating a Personal Brand That Reflects the Professional Behind the Business
In this personal branding session with Alan Farmer, a successful wedding photographer based in Westhill, Aberdeenshire, we created professional profile photographs for his website, always keeping in mind the image he wanted to project to his future clients.
As with all my branding sessions, we started with meetings to understand his ideas, his business, and the message he wanted his photographs to communicate. From there, I developed an elevated visual concept that reflected both his personality and his profession.
I designed the poses, the styling, and the overall atmosphere of the session so every image felt intentional rather than accidental.
Working with Alan was an absolute pleasure. His nature is kind, calm, and respectful, and he trusted the process completely. I can easily imagine that couples feel very comfortable working with him because that warmth naturally comes across in his personality.
Professional Headshots That Balance Confidence and Approachability
The objective was to communicate confidence through his posture and body language without losing the kindness that characterises him.
For me, elegant and natural posing is essential. A great portrait should never feel forced. The way someone stands, moves, and looks at the camera becomes part of the visual language of the photograph, and that has a direct impact on how people perceive them.
Choosing Clothing That Supports Your Personal Brand
The outfit selection was equally intentional.
Alan wanted his clothing to represent how he genuinely dresses in different aspects of his work. One outfit reflected the more formal appearance he adopts while photographing weddings, while the others showed the more relaxed style he wears during shorter sessions around Aberdeen city centre and its iconic locations.
Personal branding photography is not about creating a different version of yourself. It is about presenting the different professional contexts in which your clients already know you.
How Long Does the Consultation and Photo Session Take?
After the free consultation, I had a 45-minute meeting with Alan to understand his ideas, goals, and visual references for the session.
Once we had defined the direction, I created the entire concept and prepared a style board. We then had another 45-minute online meeting where I presented the concept to him. Fortunately, he loved it.
Of course, we also kept in touch through WhatsApp and email throughout the planning process to make sure every detail was covered before the session.
This was a headshot-only session, which is designed to last around one hour. However, I usually extend the shoot because I want to create plenty of variety for my clients to choose from. I never like to feel rushed, and I believe having enough time allows people to relax, gain confidence in front of the camera, and achieve much stronger results.
Why Every Personal Branding Session Is Different
No two professionals are the same, and neither should their photographs be.
Every business has its own personality, values, and audience. My role is to understand those elements and translate them into photographs that communicate trust, professionalism, and authenticity.
