Aberdeen Photographer: Professional Image for Entrepreneurs - Why It Means Something Different for Everyone / by Leticia Gaidon Bradford

Personal Branding and Professional Image in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire

Recently, I came across a very specific question about professional image. It came from a business owner whose work requires the comfort of sportswear, but whose target clients include corporate professionals. This created some doubts for her about how to present herself.

It’s a great question because, whether we like it or not, our authority and professionalism are also connected to how we look.

Humans are highly visual creatures, and we often decide whether to work with someone partly based on their appearance. This is a natural instinct that has helped us survive for generations. We are constantly assessing whether we are safe or at risk, and visual cues play a role in that evaluation. So yes, appearance matters.

However, this doesn’t mean that if you are a fitness coach, you need to show up in a corporate environment wearing high heels or a suit and tie. Most of the time, there is a middle ground. Fashion today is versatile and innovative, allowing you to create an outfit that communicates professionalism while still offering comfort.

What Professional Image Means in Personal Branding Photography

From a personal branding and photography perspective, appearance is about visual alignment. What people see should match what you do, how you work, and the level of quality you bring.

First impressions are not the full story, but they are the door. If that door feels confusing or inconsistent, you create a barrier before you even speak. Many people don’t wait long enough to discover your true value, they decide quickly whether to engage or not.

This doesn’t mean dressing formally. It means dressing intentionally.

As a photographer working with professionals and entrepreneurs, I see this all the time: people underestimate how much their image either supports or weakens their message. Your presence should make it easier for others to trust you, not harder.

How to Communicate Your Professional Identity Through Appearance

This idea raises an interesting question:

How can you communicate the depth of what you do through your appearance when your work doesn’t fit into just one visual expression?

In my view, this is shaped by both your environment and your target client. It is a fluid dialogue between those two elements.

“People Like Us”: Why Visual Identity Builds Trust

Visual alignment helps to build trust and creates a strong first impression.

Seth Godin, in his book This Is Marketing, emphasises the concept that “people like us do things like this.” People naturally want to identify with others. We have a strong tribal instinct.

He explains that normalisation creates culture, and culture drives our choices, which then reinforces that same normalisation. This is why visual alignment matters so much. Your style, your values, and your appearance should resonate with your target audience and the environment in which you operate.

Adapting Your Image Without Losing Your Identity

When your work doesn’t fit into a single visual expression, it’s not about choosing one fixed image. A strong professional image is not about fitting into a rigid standard. It’s about maintaining consistency in your core identity while adapting the surface to the context.

In other words, your appearance can evolve depending on where you are, but it should still feel recognisable and aligned with your values, your level, and your intention.

That is where depth is communicated, not through one look, but through coherence across different situations.
