Things that stop you from being in front of the camera
We have reached the last chapter of this short series about the things that stop you from being in front of the camera. This time, I want to talk about one of the most common reasons: budget.
I want to challenge the idea that you need a lot of money to start investing in your business visibility.
Nowadays, you can start a business with a relatively small budget. Yet, for some reason, many of us still think that making our business visible has to be expensive, as if we were living in the last century, when things were much harder and more costly.
The problem with waiting until your business is bigger before investing in your marketing is that you can end up in a Catch-22 situation.
You need money to pay for marketing.
You need marketing to attract clients and make money.
The result? You get stuck in a loop.
So, let's look at some of the things that can stop us from building brand awareness and what we can do about them.
1. Is Professional Brand Photography Too Expensive for You?
Many people imagine a photo session involving a studio, an expensive location, a professional stylist, several outfits, hair and makeup, and, of course, the photographer.
They assume they need to pay for the whole production to get good results. And, to be honest, some photographers think in the same way. So, it isn't only people without creative experience who believe this.
However, for people like me, who grew up in South America, being creative and resourceful is something we are very familiar with. We learn to make the most of what we have.
Let me give you an example. Look at the image below. You could buy a large professional backdrop costing hundreds of pounds, or you could do what I did and use a shower curtain costing less than £10!
You can see the result in the image. Does it really matter that the material was a shower curtain? Not if it does the job I need it to do.
The same applies to other aspects of a photo session. You don't always need to spend extra money on a hair and makeup artist or buy new outfits. In my own photography, I do the skin retouching myself, keeping it natural and preserving the texture of the skin.
The people you see in my portfolio haven't had professional hair and makeup services as part of their sessions. I prefer to concentrate on creating images that are well lit, have depth and show people in a way that feels authentic to them and their audience.
Of course, every client and every project is different. The important thing is to understand what you need and where your money will make a difference.
2. How to Build Brand Awareness on a Small Budget
When we start a business, we often think we need to have everything sorted out. We make a long list of things to do, and before we know it, the list has become overwhelming and expensive.
But do we really need everything from day one?
In my own experience, one of the best decisions I made was to invest in advice from someone who already knew how to build a successful business. In my case, that person was my photography coach.
It was the best money I invested in my business. She kept things practical and helped me focus on what was important, even with a limited budget.
One of her first pieces of advice was that I didn't need to spend money on a logo to start my business. She had built a million-pound business without one.
She was right to make me question where I was spending my money.
Now, take a moment and think about the brands you buy from. Do you choose a product because of its logo? Probably not. You might be loyal to the brand because of its products, its reputation, the way it makes you feel or the experience you associate with it.
Visuals play an important part in that experience. The images a brand uses can communicate beauty, adventure, exclusivity, sophistication and many other things.
This is why the images you choose for your business matter. They help people understand what you offer and what they can expect from you.
Why Your Website Images Matter
Your website is your digital business card. It is available 24 hours a day, throughout the year, and people can visit it whenever they want to find out more about your business.
So, having a well-presented website with relevant, professional images is an investment worth considering carefully.
You don't need to spend money on everything at once. But you should think about what potential clients see when they visit your website and whether your images reflect the quality of the service you provide.
3. Use Your Marketing Budget Wisely
When you start a business, you need to be strategic with your investments.
Of course, in an ideal world, you might want to hire a marketing agency to take care of everything. But in the real world, especially when you are starting out, that isn't always possible.
This doesn't mean you should stop. It means you need to decide which professionals can help you most at this stage of your business.
I can't tell you how many times I've helped clients think about the colours, mood board and visual style they want for their brand as part of preparing for a photo session.
This is particularly useful for small businesses that aren't ready to work with a branding agency but still want to start creating a more consistent visual presence.
You don't need to have everything perfect before you start. First, you need to get your business moving and attract clients. As your business grows, you can invest in refining your brand and developing it further.
Those small obstacles shouldn't stop you from taking action.
“If you have a problem that can be solved with action, then you don’t have a problem.”
4. What Star Wars Reminds Me About Working with a Limited Budget
I always think about the beginning of Star Wars when I talk about creativity and limited budgets.
The original film was released in 1977, was made on a limited budget, and some of the creatures were created using costumes borrowed from other films. Only a small number of cinemas initially showed the film, but word of mouth spread like wildfire because audiences connected with the story and this new, strange world they were seeing on screen.
The same applies to photography and to your business. Sometimes, you have to work with what you have, find another way to achieve the result you want and make sensible decisions about where to invest your money.
A limited budget doesn't mean you have to give up on your ideas. It means you need to be creative about how you put them into practice.
You don't need to do everything at once. You need to understand what is important for your business right now and make the most of the resources you have.
And when it comes to photography, you don't necessarily need an elaborate production, lots of outfits or a big team. What you need is a clear idea of what you want your images to communicate and a plan to achieve it.
