Habits, Systems, and Productivity for Business Owners
As professionals or business owners, we rely on habits and systems to help us run our jobs or businesses. We know strategically that at a certain day and time we do specific tasks, and when it comes to organising meetings, we try to fit them into structured schedules to maintain the flow of our existing commitments throughout the week.
For example, every Tuesday at 6:30 am I have a networking event, so I am already prepared with my make-up and lighting set-up for those online meetings. Therefore, it is more likely that I will schedule my free consultations that same day at 10 am and 2 pm because it is more efficient.
On Friday afternoons, I volunteer at my daughter’s school doing Lost Property. As this is the day I go to Aberdeen, I tend to organise one-to-one meetings and in-person free consultations in the city during the morning. This is what I mean by keeping the flow and being more efficient with time. Because, let’s face it, getting ready for each individual engagement takes time and preparation, so structuring your week in a fluid way makes life much easier.
When Life Interrupts Your Routine
That said, we all know that life gets in the way, and our plans and habits are interrupted, affecting what we carefully designed.
This is why I am writing this blog on Sunday morning instead of Friday or Saturday night. I had to travel to Caithness to sort through four generations of belongings for my father-in-law, who passed away last year.
So here I am, waking up at 6 am to keep my habit of bringing you this blog every Sunday, except when I am on holiday, of course.
This also means no networking this week and a long to-do list compressed into the following week.
When Disruptions Last Longer Than Expected
Sometimes interruptions last longer and are more disruptive than expected, and they are completely out of your control.
For example, when I was living in West Africa, I couldn’t go to the gym because there simply were no gyms where I lived. That healthy and essential routine that I had for decades was paused for four and a half years. Exercising outdoors was not an option either.
The Mindset: A Hiccup, Not a Failure
The purpose of this blog is to remind you that even though these situations are inevitable and frustrating, we shouldn’t lose perspective.
The key is mindset.
These moments are not failures, they are simply interruptions. Small hiccups in something that has been built with intention and purpose.
As a wife, a mum, and a freelance business owner (without family support for childcare), you can imagine how many times my plans have changed. But I don’t walk the path of giving up just because something interrupts what I had planned.

Resilience Comes From Purpose
I focus on my goal: building a business where people trust me to create the best images I can.
My passion is creating beautiful images of people and places, and that fuels my resilience to keep going, no matter what.
And as I write this, another question comes to mind:
Is this resilience natural because my business is also my way of life?
What happens when someone feels disconnected from their work? Where does resilience come from then?
In that case, your motivation might be different:
creating a better life for your family
breaking generational patterns
building something meaningful for yourself
Whatever your reason is, that is where your resilience lives.
Consistency Is Not Perfection
Consistency is not about doing everything perfectly every week, but about returning.
Returning to your habits.
Returning to your goals.
Returning to your purpose.
No matter how many times life interrupts you.
Because what truly builds a business, and a life, is not perfection, but the decision to keep going.
As a continuation of this topic, I will be delivering a talk in association with Women Connect on 28 May 2026 at 6pm via Zoom. I will explore why many women feel uncomfortable in photos and how to improve both mindset and practical aspects in front of the camera. It will also be a great opportunity to connect with professionals across Scotland in a friendly networking environment.
