Aberdeen Photographer | Don’t Take Yourself So Seriously / by Leticia Gaidon Bradford

One of the most common things I see in portrait sessions is how much pressure people put on themselves. The moment they step in front of the camera, they feel they need to get it right straight away: perfect pose, perfect smile, perfect expression from the very first click.

But it is important to remember that portraits are not an exam. You don’t need to nail it in the first second. When you demand perfection from yourself, your body becomes stiff, your shoulders tighten, and your face shows tension. Instead of looking natural and confident, you end up looking disconnected or uncomfortable in the final image. Often, the eyes are not in harmony with the smile, like that famous meme “Hide the pain Harold” which shows a man smiling while clearly suffering inside.

Portrait Photography Aberdeen: Tips for Natural Expression

The best portraits happen when you let go a little. When you laugh at yourself, when you relax into the process, and when you allow space for play and imperfection. That’s when your natural expressions shine through and your confidence truly shows on camera.

Think of a portrait session less like a performance and more like a conversation. I’ll guide you through poses, suggest adjustments, and help you find expressions that feel natural. But a good portrait only happens when you stop taking yourself so seriously and enjoy the experience.
