The Secret Behind Soft Light in Photography
If you live in Aberdeen or across Aberdeenshire, you are very familiar with cloudy days. For many people, grey skies feel uninspiring. For photographers, it is often the opposite. To be honest, it is my favourite weather condition for taking pictures.
Cloudy weather creates what we call soft light in photography, and this is one of the most flattering and versatile lighting conditions available. Instead of harsh sunlight creating strong shadows and high contrast, clouds act as a natural diffuser, spreading light evenly across the scene.
This results in smoother skin tones, balanced exposure, and a more refined look, something especially important in portrait photography and personal branding photography.
Therefore, if your photo session is approaching and the weather is forecast to be cloudy, instead of being disappointed, I would like you to see this from a different perspective.
Why Cloudy Days Are Perfect for Portrait Photography
One of the main reasons photographers prefer cloudy days is because of how light interacts with the human face.
Direct sunlight can:
• create harsh shadows under the eyes (we call them “raccoon eyes”)
• emphasise skin texture and imperfections, such as wrinkles or acne
• cause squinting and discomfort
• limit our options in terms of locations and poses depending on how the light falls on you
On a cloudy day, light becomes soft and even. This is ideal for professional headshots, personal brand photography, corporate portraits, or any other type of portrait.
Landscape photography can also benefit, depending on the creative perspective, we will talk about that next.
The Advantage of Overcast Light for Consistent Results
Another important benefit of cloudy weather photography is consistency.
On sunny days, light changes quickly, which can result in:
• strong highlights that may cause loss of detail, for example in the clouds
• deep shadows
• constant adjustments that create an overall lack of consistency
In situations like this, I use artificial light, even outdoors, to avoid being affected by constant variations in ambient light.
In contrast, overcast skies provide:
• stable lighting conditions
• easier exposure control
• more predictable results
This is especially valuable for business photography sessions, where consistency across images is key for websites, LinkedIn profiles, and marketing materials, helping to keep the brand cohesive.
Why Landscape Photography Benefits from Cloudy Skies
Cloudy days are not only beneficial for portraits; they are also excellent for landscape photography in the Scottish Highlands.
In areas like Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, where the open landscape allows for wide views of the sky, dramatic clouds can add depth, mood, and a unique atmosphere to photographs.
The texture that clouds create transforms a simple scene into something more impactful, far more interesting, and more attention-grabbing than a flat blue sky. These are the kinds of images that make people stop scrolling.
For black and white photography, cloudy conditions are even more valuable, enhancing contrast and reinforcing structure.
Cloudy Weather and Visual Storytelling
From a visual storytelling perspective, cloudy days help create a specific emotional tone.
This is particularly effective in personal branding photography, where the goal is not just to show how someone looks. The message follows a cohesive visual line, connecting one image to the next without “visual hiccups” (I just made up this expression, and I think it works quite well).
Embracing the Weather for Better Photography
Cloudy days are not a problem to solve. Depending on the style you are looking for in your photo session, they can be an excellent tool to use.
If you are a professional looking for elegant and harmonious personal branding images, or simply someone who wants to capture meaningful portraits, don’t be disappointed by a cloudy day. It might actually be your best ally for achieving the style you want.
And in photography, soft light is often the most flattering light of all.
