Why Corporate Headshots and Personal Branding Photography Are More Than “Just Photos”
It doesn’t matter if you are starting your business or are already an established entrepreneur, many people make the same mistake when organising a professional photo session.
You need images of your staff or yourself, you know that good photography is important, and you decide to hire a professional photographer. However, there are too many options, and you don’t have time to properly research who is out there. So, you ask your part-time secretary or another employee to request quotes for a photo session.
They are efficient and send the exact same email to every photographer, usually with very little information about what you actually need.
Something like: “We need x amount of headshots. How much will it cost?”
Because you think you are buying headshots, when in reality you are buying public perception, trust, authority and visual identity.
And those things directly affect how people perceive your business.
Why Asking Only for Price Changes the Entire Dynamic
Now the photographer knows that price is your main priority because it is the only thing you asked about. Logically, the conclusion is that quality, strategy, or experience are secondary for you.
However, the photographer also realises something else, you probably don’t know the options available either.
And I can already hear some people thinking: “Well… it’s just a headshot.”
Is it?
Outdoor photo session or studio?
Or maybe both?
Do you want retouching?
Most people do.
But do you know the difference in retouching styles between photographers?
How much retouching is too much?
How natural should the final image look?
Is the photographer also the retoucher, or will they send the photos to a third party, possibly even in another country?
How much time does the photographer dedicate to each person?
Five minutes?
Twenty-five minutes?
Is the session in the photographer’s studio or at your business location?
What about lighting?
Natural light or artificial light?
What are the advantages and disadvantages of each?
Has the photographer worked with mature clients before?
Different ages require different lighting techniques. If you have mixed generations in the same session, choosing the most flattering light for everyone can be the best option. And what about posing and communication styles during the session?
How is the photographer’s personality?
Do you think people will easily connect with this person?
What mood do you want to project to your target client?
Who is your target client?
Did you communicate the deadline for the photographs?
And I could keep going...
But let’s not miss the most important point here: which photographer truly understands your vision, or can help you achieve it? You don’t know, because you were never really in contact with them.
In fact, nobody was in contact, because price was the only thing being considered.
Cookie-Cutter Headshots and the Fear of Standing Out
I understand that being photographed can feel like a pain! And many people want to get it done as quickly and painlessly as possible, like pulling off a plaster.
Now, I want to make something very clear, there is absolutely nothing wrong if you simply want a basic, cookie-cutter headshot session that looks exactly like every other corporate portrait out there.
Where the mental health coach has the same visual style as the business coach.
Where every website looks identical.
Where nobody takes any visual risks.
Be a zebra. Stay safe. Blend in so nobody can distinguish you, even from professionals working in completely different industries. Everybody looks the same.
The point of this blog is not to criticise that decision. The point is to make you conscious of it.
Because many business owners spend money on photography without understanding the visual consequences of those choices, and later they feel disappointed with the results.
“ Portraits are our way of telling who we are. ”
The message Behind Delegating Photography Decisions
This is where things become interesting.
Businesses often believe they are being efficient by delegating photography enquiries to someone who has little or no visual knowledge.
And from an operational perspective, maybe they are.
But what we delegate says a lot about what we value.
When visual communication is reduced to: “How much for x amount of headshots?”
It says that image is secondary.
Meanwhile, customers are judging businesses visually almost immediately.
That contradiction is formidable.
Because while companies intellectually understand that branding matters, emotionally and operationally they often treat photography as an afterthought.
Visual communication is part of the emotional language of your business, not decoration.
How Professional Photography Impacts Staff and Company Culture
When everything becomes purely transactional, the result is not connection or culture. The whole experience also becomes transactional.
When your staff feel that they are doing a headshot simply as another corporate duty, the emotional experience is completely different from feeling that someone is genuinely creating a beautiful image of them, one they feel proud of.
That changes the atmosphere.
People feel seen and valued. They feel they matter beyond empty corporate slogans from HR departments.
And yes, photography can have that impact.
Some people don’t consider photography important, and that is perfectly fine. Businesses make strategic decisions every day.
To me, bad photography is not important, but powerful portraits are incredibly impactful.
When a portrait is captured well, it can even change how the person photographed sees themselves. I know that because I have witnessed it many times throughout my career as a photographer.
Professional Photography Is a Business Decision, Not a Technical One
As a photographer working with professionals and entrepreneurs in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire, I see this constantly.
The businesses that understand photography strategically are often the ones that:
communicate more clearly and are more memorable
attract stronger clients because they look more professional
build trust faster
and create a stronger visual identity
Because they understand that professional photography is primarily about grabbing attention and communication.
